About Shopify Policy Generator
Shopify, the ecommerce platform, offers a set of free policy generators as part of its business tools. At the time of checking there were three: a privacy policy generator, a refund policy generator and a terms and conditions (terms of service) generator.
Each generator uses the same short two step form. The first step asks for your company name, email address, street address, city, postcode, country and state or province. The second asks for your website address and whether your site uses cookies. Shopify then emails you a personalised policy template.
The generators are simple fill-in templates rather than detailed questionnaires. The pages do not name specific laws that the templates are written for, and there is no hosting, editing or update service. They may suit a small shop that wants a starting point to adapt.
How to create a policy with Shopify Policy Generator
- Open the generator for the policy you need: privacy, refund, or terms and conditions.
- Enter your company name, contact email and address.
- Enter your website address and tick the box if your site uses cookies.
- Wait for the policy to arrive in your inbox, then copy it into your website and edit it to fit your business.
Things to know
- Marketing emails: Entering your email address also signs you up to receive marketing emails from Shopify.
- Templates only: Shopify calls the output sample templates and says they are not legal advice.
- No named laws: The generator pages do not say which laws the templates address, so check UK requirements such as UK GDPR and consumer cancellation rights yourself.
- No updates or hosting: You receive a one-off template by email. Keeping it up to date is up to you.
